  • Wiki Loves Monuments is an European photography contest, that seeks to awaken interest in the existing European monuments. In Spain it is organised by Wikimedia España, with the collaboration of Amical Viquipèdia.
Wikimedia España is a non-profit organization, approved by the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. as the Wikimedia Chapter of Spain. Its mission is to promote directly or indirectly all free content initiatives and projects, such as those hosted and supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.
Amical Viquipedia is a non-profit organisation, created by editors and supporters of the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., mainly Wikipedia in Catalan, with the mission of promoting the projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. and free content in general in Catalan-speaking regions.
  • The contest will have a first stage that will take place simultaneously in several European countries, being organized in each country by different and independent associations or groups. For the second stage, each country will select 10 pictures that will participate in the European contest.
  • Those people interested in participating in the contest must upload the pictures they’ve taken of Bienes de Interés Cultural (BIC) of the Spanish State, category Monuments and with an associated code from the Ministry of Culture, or the relevant Autonomous Community, in Wikimedia Commons (the file repository), using the license Creative Commons- Attribution- Share Alike 3.0.
  • The purpose is to have complete lists of all European monuments in the different language versions of Wikipedia, and images to illustrate them, giving a thorough and unique vision of the cultural, architectonic, historical and artistic heritage of the European countries where the contest will take place.
  • The images must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons between September 1 and September 30. Any image uploaded before or after will not be eligible for the contest.
  • The images will be reviewed by a jury during the month of October. At the end of the month, the winners will be announced and the organizers will contact them.
  • Everyone who decides to participate in this contest accepts these rules and all decisions the jury may make. Failure to comply may be grounds for disqualification.

Advice

  • There are many monuments that are, or are located in, private property. Do not access the inside of a private property without the relevant permission. In Spain, however, it is possible to take pictures from a public place, so even if you cannot have inside access, you may be able to take exterior shots.
  • Many monuments may be of little interest externally, but be true artistic ghems on the inside. Explore them, take as many pics as possible and show the general vision as well as its details.
