Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 is an international photo contest around cultural heritage monuments open to everybody and organised by the local chapters of Wikimedia and volunteer groups from different countries. Wikimedia Foundation is the entity supporting Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, among many projects.
Wiki Loves Monuments contest was organised for the first time in 2010 in the Netherlands, and in 2011 it had place in 18 european country, achieving 169.348 photographs. Given the success of the 2011 edition, this year the contest will take place at global level, joining countries from Amarica, Asia and Africa, plus most of european countries. The best 10 photos from each country will compete in an international round, whose jury will select the best monument photographs of 2012, with its own prizes.
Cultural Heritage is an important part of the knowledge gathered and spread by Wikipedia. Everyone can contribute, both with images and articles. An image is worth a thousand words, in all languages.
Everyone is invited to upload images of monuments under a free license for use in the different Wikipedias. The idea of this project is to get a global and unique vision of the cultural heritage of each country.
The basic rules for this contest are as follows:
- Photograph monuments, which can be done at any moment.
- Publish the photograph under a free license.
- Upload it to Wikimedia Commons between the 1st and 30th September of 2012.
- The photographs must have been taken by the participants and loaded by themselves.
- The monument identifier must be provided with the photographs.
